This is the place where, 70 years ago, the first water scheme for Almora town was initiated from a natural spring. Nearby Sitalakhet is a small village called Khoont, known for being the birthplace of Pandit Govind Bhallab Pant, freedom fighters and former home minister of India. Today, a centenary memorial stands at Khoont in his honor.
In its religious significance, Sitalakhet is no less. A famous temple of Syahi Devi is located here. This goddess is highly revered among the local people.
Sitalakhet is situated 35 kms from Almora.
There are hardly any places left in the hills which hasn’t seen an influx of tourists. May be there are a few left, that the tourists are unaware of, that gives more breathtaking views, that is so close to nature and are best for a solitude filled vacations.
Here is a place, a little off beat, a little far off but just has too much to offer to anyone going here.
Hidden in the jungles between Almora and Ranikhet is a small sleepy town of Sitlakhet. A little detour from the main road would get you here. The drive is mainly through a dense pine forest with small hamlets scattered along side the road.
Sitlakhet is also famous for its orchards, amazing landscapes, and its produce of herbs and medicinal plants.
Though locals devotees visit this place for the famous Siyahi Devi Temple which is 2-3 mile hike from the Sitlakhet village, visitors often enjoy tranquility and solitude this place has to offer.
The early morning and late evening views of the Himalayas are something you should never miss, the golden light on the white mountains is truly spellbinding. Siltakhet offers a 200 degree view of the majestic Garhwal and Kumaon himalayas.
It gets really chilly in the winters, though that is best time to enjoy the morning sun and some of the best himalayan views.
