Nelong, the word itself means a place defined with blue stones. The Nelong Valley is located at an altitude of 11,009 feet above the level of the sea in the Gangotri National Park, just 45 km away from the Indo-Tibetan Border. The Nelong Valley is one of the most enchanting valleys and is the hidden treasure of Uttarkashi in Uttrakhand. The most amazing fact about this valley is that the climate, as well as the landscape of the Nelong Valley, is similar to the cold desert of Ladakh.
The cold desert of the valley is a treat for the eyes of the tourists. The tempting place offers a 360-degree view of the Tibetan Plateau and the surreal landscape of the Nelong Valley. There is the presence of the old infrastructures such as the wooden bridge and the Lal Devta Temple in the region in and around the valley. The valley is also the home of the some of the endangered species of wildlife including Himalayan blue sheep, snow leopard and musk deer.
Prior to 1962, the Nelong was one of the most popular trade routes between India and Tibet. But, during the Indo-China war in 1962, the villagers were made to migrate from the valley and the area was under the control of the Indo-Tibetan police and various army checkpoints were established in the place. Since then the valley was closed for the civilians. But, it was in the year 2015, that the Government opened the gates of the Nelong Valley for the civilians after the State Government petition. But, the Indians can visit the valley only after seeking the permission of the SDM, Uttarkashi and Forest Department.
The Nelong Valley opens in the month of May and remains open till the month of November for the tourists to plan their visit and enjoy the mystic beauty of this valley. However, due to the security reasons, the activities of camping is restricted in the valley.
